About Traditional Leaded Glass Windows

If you have a character or period property that currently has traditional leaded glass windows, you’ll understand their beauty and charm, but they aren’t always ideal for modern living. Stained glass windows for homes, especially if original, tend to have very low energy efficiency, are often draughty and single pane, so offer very little in terms of thermal and noise protection.

We can fit modern stained glass windows that include all the benefits of modern glazing and the advances in technology, but lose none of the appeal of traditional leaded windows.

We have a highly skilled leaded glass specialist on our team, who uses traditional techniques, and many years of experience working on listed building, churches and period properties, to produce stunning double glazing leaded window designs.

Traditional Leaded vs Contemporary Glass

Those living in period properties which have traditional leaded glass in their home may be loathe to change it, due to the specific decorative design that they love, or perhaps simply because they don’t want to risk losing that feature of their home. Traditional leaded windows have a great look, but are often not really suitable for modern living environments.

Contemporary glass offers benefits such as better thermal insulation, greater external noise reduction and much-improved security. In the past, the compromise has been that contemporary glass windows haven’t had much to offer period properties or those who want a more traditional look for their glazing.

Fortunately, homeowners no longer have to choose between traditional leaded glass vs contemporary glass. This is because double glazed leaded window designs can be installed that make full use of the latest innovations in energy efficiency and minimising heat loss, as well as reducing the external noise coming into the home, and providing all of the security benefits of double glazing. This is possible without losing any of the decorative qualities of the old windows, because replacement stained glass windows and new leaded glass windows can incorporate the design of your choice, including the same look as your previous glass.

Modern & Traditional Leaded Windows FAQs

We’ve answered some of the most common questions we’re asked about leaded glass windows below.

The terms leaded glass and stained glass are often used to mean the same thing, but strictly speaking, there is a difference between the two. Essentially, stained glass relates to glass that has been stained a particular colour, whereas leaded glass refers to the technique used in leaded windows to create the designs. Stained glass is used in combination with leading to create the colourful designs and leading is used in isolation in designs that have no colour.

Therefore, a window can be both stained glass and leaded glass, but not every window with leaded glass includes stained glass.

Modern stained glass windows and double glazed leaded window designs are made to last, with the glass usually lasting many many decades as long as they are cared for properly and gently cleaned regularly. Therefore, replacement stained glass windows and any glazing with leaded designs can easily last more than a lifetime when maintained effectively.

Whether or not you should replace your lead windows is a decision that only you can make, but with contemporary glass windows that replicate your original leaded design, replacing them doesn’t mean that you need to lose any of the character of your home. You also get all of the benefits of modern windows, that can help bring down energy bills and reduce external noise.

The cost of replacing traditional leaded windows will vary considerably, depending on the number and size of windows and the complexity of the leaded designs. We would be happy to provide you with a no-obligation quote if you get in touch to tell us about your requirements using the form below.
